The Soviet Union won the Cold War. Soldiers of the Red Army invaded Mexico and Canada, and in America and does a nuclear bomb was dropped. The country is proper a mess. The bomb dropped on Washington, the president is dead, Soviet troops occupied the country. An interesting perspective, does not it?

Actually, I kinda agree to a certain extent. These sorts of laws (and the full civil rights laws which are sure to follow) will eventually impact the beliefs of *some* Christians by not allowing them to discriminate against gays, etc.

There were plenty of "Christians" in the South who believed it was a sin to allow mixed race couples to marry. Plenty of "Christians" justified slavery with scripture. These particular Christians are rightfully afraid of the coming changes which will force them to live with openly gay people and treat them equally with everyone else. TOO FREAKING BAD.

In Europe there are some "Muslims" who protest against not being able to similarly discriminate. Someone needs to come up with a great way to explain what Akiva said – that discrimination against discrimination isn’t possible, or is a good thing. Or something.

It’s like arguing over ‘freedom’. You have the theoretical maximalists, who favour a laissez faire approach, and then you have people who are more concerned over the lower bound and the average, who say, "You know, even if you gussie up slavery as ‘voluntary indentured servitude’, it’s still not OK, and if that infringes on your freedom to sell yourself, too bad".

The other silly arguement these folks will use is that we’re being intolerant of them by not letting them discriminate as they see fit. By that arguement we should allow slavery, etc.

Makes me wonder though: hate crime law protects people from acts of aggression based on intolerance. It doesn’t stop people from thinking intolerant thoughts. Why should these Christians be bothered about it unless they want to act on their intolerances?

Akiva, they’re afraid they WILL be unable to continue to act on their intolerances. Currently, I believe it’s legal to not hire people because they’re gay. They’re afraid we’re going to take away their "right" to not hire gays.

i get that they’re looking at the slippery slope and all, but FTA: "However, the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act clearly stipulates that it does not apply to constitutionally protected speech." – so they’re saying this law is unconstitutional as their argument, but the law clearly doesn’t overstep the constitution… weird
