First comment, John, is that the last Sunday in the Season of Epiphany is Transfiguration Sunday. Of course, you can see that from the gospel lesson. The idea upheld by the collect is that Christ’s transfiguration is a sign of our own in him. That’s the short short answer!

P.S. the Epistle fits with the Transfiguration (maybe) if you think of Peter wanting to stay on the mountain (mountain top experience). The Corinthians wanted to stay "on the mountain" of dramatic manifestations, but didn’t want to go down to low ground and love folks.

Mark: I’m with you, man. I think these most basic elements (water being another) are more interesting and significant than we know. I could go off for a bit on the newly discovered oddities of light (functioning more like a sound!) or the chemical uniqueness of water (expanding when it cools, unlike other elements!). There is more to be understood about these things. Probably more than we will ever understand.

I would add another question to that one. How did they recognize them? Jesus doesn’t seem to say who he is talking with, but Peter assumes it right off. Inspiration of the holy spirit? Assumption based on other reasons?

I am intrigued by the structure of the paragraph describing what love is and what it is not. Love is the subject, not us. It does not say, "people who love are patient…" or "If you wish to love, be patient…" It is not an injunction. At the same time it does not go so far as to state "God is patient…" which the passage could do.

I wonder if Paul is not acting as if he is letting us in on a secret–This is how God acts, but if I say that directly you would accept his love and might not live it. This is how you should, but never will fully on earth, act, but if I told you to, you would think it was another law to add to your list. By making Love the actor, Paul seems to balance grace and works. (Just a thought)

I wonder if there was something about the personification of love that really "worked" for the Greek mind in which gods were larger-than-life "people" who embodied a specific concept. Minerva=wisdom, and so on. I wonder if the notion of "Love" as a character touched something in their cultural thinking as well as their heart and soul.
