I Cor 13:12 is just world-class writing. Well, done, Paul & H.S. Wycliffe translation (~1382): "And we see now by a mirror in darkness, but then face to face; now I know of part, but then I shall know, as I am known."

    - Mark Mahaffey

I agree, Mark. There is something about that phrase that stirs a sort of ache in the soul–a longing for what will be.

    - Aaron Burt

first – my first experience with this forum last week really had an impact on the depth of my experience in church Sunday – wonderful Aaron – Thank you

    - john steele

    Ps139:1-6 would fit v. well alongside ICor13:12

    - Mark Mahaffey

Thanks Aaron and all, this discussion is very helpful. It really helped me contemplate for preaching last Sunday.

    - Greg Goebel

I’m struck by ICor.13:8’s translation as "Love never ends." v. what I’ve been used to "Love never fails". Quite a different sense for me at times.

    - Kevin benson

Aaron do you have an idea about the line from the Collect "and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory" especially on "glory to glory"

    - john steele

First comment, John, is that the last Sunday in the Season of Epiphany is Transfiguration Sunday. Of course, you can see that from the gospel lesson. The idea upheld by the collect is that Christ’s transfiguration is a sign of our own in him. That’s the short short answer! :)

    - Aaron Burt

Kevin, Wycliffe again v.8: "Charity falleth never down, whether prophecies shall be voided, either languages shall cease, either science shall be destroyed."

    - Mark Mahaffey

our own [transfiguration (process of sanctification?)] in [through,by,etc] Him?

    - john steele

Thanks, Mark. Interesting word choices yet again.

    - Kevin benson

    cool nice – getting it..

    - john steele

I love the examples of God’s way; e.g. face shine, cloud, the proof positive, and the mysteries revealed and to come "who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure" in this lectioaery

    - john steele

Whenever I see these verses referring to "the glow of the spirit" (yeah I inferred that) I cannot help but think of a cheesy kung fu movie "The Last Dragon" in which a young student is looking to attain "the glow" to finish his training. There is a moment in the movie of transition wherein the hero looks inward and has the "aha!" moment and thus attains the glow through a Zen…
    more…

    - John Dugaw

I’ve always wondered about Moses’s face in this passage, too. I pictured him as kind of "glow in the dark" when I read it as a kid.

    - Christy Goodman

I love how the Lectionary connects Moses shining face to the Transfiguration. Last year I preached "The people of God on the Mountian of God in the Presence of God" Moses – the Transfiguration – The book of Revelation

    - Greg Goebel

    Greg, very nice!

    - John Dugaw

    nice

    - john steele

P.S. the Epistle fits with the Transfiguration (maybe) if you think of Peter wanting to stay on the mountain (mountain top experience). The Corinthians wanted to stay "on the mountain" of dramatic manifestations, but didn’t want to go down to low ground and love folks.

    - Greg Goebel

Interesting connection, Greg. I like the idea of bringing the lofty, glorious transfiguration experiences down to the messy, everyday loving of people.

    - Christy Goodman

and Peter eventually ended up smack dab in the middle of reality, with the Mountaintop experience dramatically centering him on the glory of Christ.

    - Greg Goebel

instead of "reality" maybe it would be better for me to say everyday life…challenges…because the transfiguration was just as much "reality" as any other experience Peter had

    - Greg Goebel

Light, aside from being the only consistent metaphor I see in Scripture, is I think a much more literal/physical part of holiness than we generally credit.

    - Mark Mahaffey

Greg: True. And perhaps even more "real" than his everyday experience of life.

    - Aaron Burt

Why Moses and Elijah? Is it because of the prophetic nature of the discussion or something else?

    - Kevin benson

Yes, Aaron, ala C.S. Lewis "Heaven is the reality of which our current experience is the shadow"

    - Greg Goebel

Mark: I’m with you, man. I think these most basic elements (water being another) are more interesting and significant than we know. I could go off for a bit on the newly discovered oddities of light (functioning more like a sound!) or the chemical uniqueness of water (expanding when it cools, unlike other elements!). There is more to be understood about these things. Probably more than we will ever understand.

    - Aaron Burt

John Dugaw: I like the kung fu reference! It actually makes me think of Kung Fu Panda. Skadoosh.

    - Aaron Burt

Kevin: Great question. Any takers? Come on folks! Why Moses and Elijah?!

    - Aaron Burt

Moses was the beginning of the end and Elijah was the end of the beginning and the example of glory to glory (Elisha) ?

    - john steele

I would add another question to that one. How did they recognize them? Jesus doesn’t seem to say who he is talking with, but Peter assumes it right off. Inspiration of the holy spirit? Assumption based on other reasons?

    - Christy Goodman

Right on, Christy. That’s another one. Do they have name tags? ;-) I’m wondering about the connection to Him being the Messiah? Prophecies? Maybe a context of conversation Jesus had but we don’t know about?

    - Kevin benson

Moses and Elijah were and are regular Jewish favorites. And maybe just Jesus’ favorites, too. They were both pretty much the stuff.

    - Mark Mahaffey

    Tru dat, Mark.

    - Aaron Burt

Christy, I have always wondered that as well.

    - Aaron Burt

Moses was the beginning of the return and blessed enough to be in Gods presence as a chosen one; Elijah was the blessed example of ascension and an example of "glory to glory" (transference ref Elisha) as chosen; and all, including Jesus are emissaries of God.

    - john steele

Maybe Elijah’s fiery chariot was parked up there. Maybe Moses’ face was shiny?

    - Aaron Burt

I am, of course, joking. Hmm. Or maybe not?

    - Aaron Burt

John Steele: Interesting point. These were two men who were able to stand in God’s presence. Maybe that tipped Peter off?

    - Aaron Burt

perhaps, like a dream, the "just knew"

    - Greg Goebel

Maybe he just wanted to share this moment with his close friends…what must it have been like for these chosen disciples to see some of their heroes

    - Kevin benson

all represent God’s chosen, wield His power and authority and have an earthly connection and prove a eternal spiritual relationship in this moment that point to the new cov as pre-proof of our relationship with Holy Spirit and the power of God…

    - john steele

    ya think maybe?

    - john steele

    just throwin it out there

    - john steele

well, there is the connection between Law (Moses) and Prophets (Elijah).

    - Christy Goodman

    Which Christ came to fulfill

    - Christy Goodman

Sigh: Calvin’s admonition here applieth: http://books.google.com/books…

    - Mark Mahaffey

So bummed that that didn’t link to a work by Watterson.

    - Aaron Burt

    Aaron, I’m all smiles.

    - Kevin benson

Quick poll: Has anyone read "Love is the Killer App"?

    - Aaron Burt

    nope

    - john steele

    no

    - Greg Goebel

No one? Hmm. The premise ties in really well to the Epistle’s notion that love is the most powerful and central… thing?

    - Aaron Burt

    looks good

    - john steele

Another question: I heard a discussion on the radio the other day in which callers and the hosts were trying to define love. How ’bout y’all? What is your working definition of love? Got one? Have you read/heard one you like?

    - Aaron Burt

Before I defer to Calvin, Matthew 5:17. Aaron, in light of this weekend, I’m shying away from the metaphor

    - Kevin benson

The metaphor of an "app"? Heh heh. Good call.

    - Aaron Burt

I thought the same thing, Kevin.

    - Christy Goodman

Let’s not think of it as a metaphor but as a descriptor. Kind of like Paul is doing: Love is patient and kind, etc.

    - Aaron Burt

By the way, Mt 5:17 is significant in my mind too as we consider the question of "Why Moses and Elijah." At the same time, I’m still not entirely sure what’s going on with it all. I get the connection, but still don’t quite know what God is building.

    - Aaron Burt

Love is almost as ill-defined as fear in English. A better word (again, Wycliffe) might be "charity" (in the virtue sense): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki…

    - Mark Mahaffey

Lewis defines it as "the constant desire for the good of another" or somesuch… IIRC

    - Mark Mahaffey

    Love is sacrifice

    - Kevin benson

its an amazing thing; science and darwin can’t touch (deny) or factor (in/out) and is THE central point…

    - john steele

I am intrigued by the structure of the paragraph describing what love is and what it is not. Love is the subject, not us. It does not say, "people who love are patient…" or "If you wish to love, be patient…" It is not an injunction. At the same time it does not go so far as to state "God is patient…" which the passage could do.

    - Christy Goodman

I wonder if Paul is not acting as if he is letting us in on a secret–This is how God acts, but if I say that directly you would accept his love and might not live it. This is how you should, but never will fully on earth, act, but if I told you to, you would think it was another law to add to your list. By making Love the actor, Paul seems to balance grace and works. (Just a thought)

    - Christy Goodman

First: Mark, I too would like to recapture the use of charity. Kevin, I think that fits more in Paul’s system of describing rather than defining; no? John, I agree; the unquantifiability (a word?) of love keeps it from the scrutiny of a numbers-based system like science (not that I don’t love science).

    - Aaron Burt

those are great comments: Christy and Aaron

    - john steele

    Second: Christy, great point!

    - Aaron Burt

I wonder if there was something about the personification of love that really "worked" for the Greek mind in which gods were larger-than-life "people" who embodied a specific concept. Minerva=wisdom, and so on. I wonder if the notion of "Love" as a character touched something in their cultural thinking as well as their heart and soul.

    - Aaron Burt

"charity" is societally sterotyped and has a lesser-ness that may not require as much commitment in my mind

    - john steele

def Aaron we aretracking – its a bigger word

    - john steele

Aaron, I like your Greek mind observation. What was their understanding of "is" when he says these things? I’m with on the describing/defining. Yet another effect of multitasking.

    - Kevin benson

Yeah, John, the only common use of charity now is the expression "I don’t accept charity," implying a token gift to a person who one believes to be incapable of helping himself.

    - Aaron Burt

Hence the need for its recovery.

    - Mark Mahaffey

LOve y’all and Church and the Apostles Peace — 4†

    - john steele

I like the Greek connection, Aaron. Mark, with the evolution (some say devolution) of English, my guess is that adding an adjective to love would be more likely than reverting back to charity. "Unconditional," perhaps.

    - Christy Goodman

Or, "lovingkindness" still carries most of the proper connotation

    - Mark Mahaffey

Even that, Mark, seems to me a strange (and maybe poor) rendering of the notion of Hesed. The bottom line is that words fail us. Alas.

    - Aaron Burt

Back at you, John, and to you all: Much love in Christ. Or, if you prefer, charity!

    - Aaron Burt

Love needs to be embodied. :-)
